✅ To get the Italian Tax Code (or CF, codice fiscale), you need to apply for it before your arrival in Milan, through the Italian embassy in your Country, as you book your apartment in Milan.
Once you are here, it will be much more complicated, it will take a lot of your time and efforts 😓
—
⚠️ If you don’t manage, unfortunately, to get the Italian Tax Code before arriving in Milan, here you are the procedure to apply for it once you are in Milan:
– –
- You need to go personally to one of the offices of the “Agenzia delle Entrate” in Milan (Tax Authority).
You need before to take an appointment here.
Video How to request Online an appointment at the Agenzia delle Entrate.
The available dates could be even after 1 month *.
If you go directly without an appointment, you may risk they don’t accept you.
Please bring there the following printed papers:
– AA48 form filled/signed (here you can see how/where to fill it),
– this letter filled/signed,
– your passport, visa and your university in Milan acceptance letter.
They should give you your Italian CF the same day.
–
- If you are a student, I would recommend you to ask your university in Milan if you can apply for the CF through them. But usually they provide you a temporary CF not valid, because the CF can only be issued and registered by the Tax Authority. Check here if it’s valid
——
- If you are extra EU citizen, once you are in Milan and you go to the Questura (Italian police) to apply for the “Permit of Stay” (Permesso di Soggiorno) they could sometimes provide your Italian tax code, but not always and usually after 30 days, so too late.

🧐 Why do you need the Italian Tax code, even if you are staying in Italy for just a few months?
You need the CF, mainly to allow the landlord to register the lease contract.
He’s required by law to do it within 30 days from your arrival*, to avoid to pay a fine.
If you don’t provide your CF in time, you’ll be charged by that fine.
–
——-⚠️ ⚠️ Somebody, some universities in Milan as well, is recently saying it’s not needed anymore the CF of not-Italian renters and it’s possible to register the contract also without their tax code, BUT IT’S NOT TRUE 👎🏻🙅♀️
If you don’t have the CF, the landlord is required to collect, fill and sign a lot of papers, take the appointment to the Tax agency to go there personally, take a lot of time and efforts to go there and make the line. Actually NONE of the landlords, nor their accountants, is available to do that.

Your Italian Codice Fiscale, it will be a paper similar to this one:

📧 Requesting the Tax Code via Email from the Italian Revenue Agency 📧
There can be extreme cases, although they are very rare, where this situation might occur:
❗️The Italian consulate abroad, near where you live, has informed you that they cannot provide you with a tax code.
❗️Another very rare scenario is that even if you go in person to the offices of the Agenzia delle Entrate in Milan (Tax Authority), they may refuse to issue your tax code, stating that they can only provide it once you have your appointment with the police for your Permesso di Soggiorno (residence permit).
❗️The third case is if, when you arrive in Milan, you still haven’t managed to obtain your tax code and have scheduled an appointment at the Agenzia delle Entrate, but this appointment falls beyond the 30-day deadline for registering your lease contract.
👉🏻 Here’s what you could do:
you could send an email to all the addresses listed below, attaching the completed and signed form as indicated above:
– AA48 form filled/signed (here you can see how/where to fill it),
– this letter filled/signed,
– your passport, visa and your university in Milan acceptance letter.
It is very rare for them to issue the tax code via email, but in these extreme cases, it may still be worth trying 💪🏻
